Betty Skirt from Shaffer Sisters

Monday, October 27, 2014
A while ago I had the privilege of testing new sizes added to the Shaffer Sisters Betty skirt pattern. This skirt is great! It has several options to choose from like regular gather, large pleats, small pleats and gathered with placket. The skirt is sized from newborn to 6x! So it will last you for many years. I discovered while making this skirt that my girls hate anything that fits at the natural waist. Luckily there is an option to alter the yoke to make it so it will fit where they would like it to sit. Another option that I am big fan of is you can either print out pattern pieces or if you don't want to use paper you can use the cutting chart to cut out your pieces.

We had our fall field trip to Ticonderoga Farm today and since she actually agreed to wear the skirt without bribery, I knew it would be a great chance to get some good pictures.....well sometimes that doesn't actually happen. For some reason I didn't factor in the amount of running she would do. I am going to blame baby brain for that.

She also wouldn't leave her shirt tucked in

Little miss picked this fabric at Finch Sewing Studio months ago (and by months I mean at least 6).

I did the smaller yoke so it would sit lower. I probably could have left a little bit more on so there was more of one. She really likes it so it is a win in my book.

Wish I had noticed how off my gathers are.

We are in the phase of starting to want to dress ourselves so dressing for photos doesn't always work. I will take whatever doesn't cause an extreme meltdown right now.

Happiness about pumpkins until she changed her mind and threw it on the ground, kicking it, them making the declaration that she didn't want one anymore. The rapid emotions of an almost 3 year is amazing.

That looks sums it up

The skirt has enough give so it can still be easily played in. She ran around and played with her sister the whole time and it never got in the way.
Tether ball anyone?

Of course the Frozen rain boots are a must everyday, even when it isn't raining or wet.

If you need a skirt with several options and has a large size range check out the Betty skirt pattern, you can use code BETTYTOUR for 30% off until November 16, 2014.

Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead)

Friday, October 24, 2014
Dia de los Muertos or Day of the Dead is a Mexican holiday that focuses on remembering friends and family who have passed away. The celebration happens on October 31st, November 1st and 2nd. If you want more in-depth info you can check out websites like Celebrate Day of the Dead or National Geographic.

I have also loved sugar skulls, which are very colorful skulls made of sugar that are given as gifts to the living and the dead. They are never morbid or creepy (or shouldn't be). The sugar skulls should be happy and vibrant.

When Melissa from Rebel and Malice posted she wanted to do a Day of the Dead blog tour, I jumped on board. My first idea was to make a onesie for baby #3 to wear after he arrives. I have a sugar skull stencil already so it just seemed to want to be done.

I was incorrect...It didn't want to be stenciled onto a onesie.

Or at least the black didn't want to be.

So scratch that design....I found a free printable one from Hello Little Home and used it for an iron on.

Still not really what I had envisioned,  I scratched the whole idea together.

Let's move onto something else shall we. I do use the same stencil I attempted to use on the onesie as a paper design for my etsy shop.

The design was inspired by some friends who got married on Halloween who painted their faces for Day of the Dead as part of their attire.  He also happens to be amazing tattoo artist who did a sugar skull on my arm.
Photo taken by the fabulous Sarah Kaupp.

There are a lot of items that can be purchased that have the Day of the Dead theme to them. Here are some of my favorites:
Pretty In Ink Jewelry has a lot of different dogs and designs with the theme. I personally have the Bulldog print and necklace.

Paper Source has these Sugar Skull cookie cutters by Fred if you want to attempt your own. They also have a variety of other items like calendars, glasses and paper goods.

And one of my favorite fabrics for Day of the Dead is Bonehead by Michael Miller.

A great place to find items for Day of the Dead is Etsy. You will be able to find unique pieces and  you would be supporting fellow crafters.

Thank you Melissa for setting up a blog tour. Be sure to check out the other blogs set up to be apart of  the tour and sign up to win the giveaway!

Kitschy Coo Skater Dress for Halloween

Monday, October 20, 2014
My girls LOVE Halloween! I get asked on a daily basis when Halloween is and that the morning of I need to make sure I tell them that Halloween is that day. The oldest has spent time practicing trick or treating and wanted to decorate before October even started. So when I saw Halloween knit fabric I knew I would make them dresses and the Kitschy Coo girls skater dress just seemed to make sense.

Over the weekend we went to go get some pumpkins to carve. Luckily they both wore the dresses I made! Not normal....they like to magically not like what I make them when I plan on photos.
Who likes Halloween?? "We do!"

Can you see the excitement?  Fabric for the dress on left was from Eurogirlsboutique.com (it doesn't appear they have it in stock anymore). Fabric for the dress on the right was from Simplifi Fabric by Lillestoff. Had small heart attack cutting into the Lillestoff fabric, praying that she would actually wear it. I am sure anyone who has ever bought expensive fabric knows the feeling I am talking about.
Picking a pumpkin can be hard work

Everyone found one. Mine is the smallest one. Less to scoop out and carve.

They also offered exotic pumpkins and other colors to check out.

What do you mean I have to share the wagon??

Helping daddy with the wagon.

I love the skater dress pattern by Kitschy Coo! It comes in sizes 18m/2t to 7/8years. You can make it with long, short or sleeveless. I actually got my copy thru my Pattern Membership by Sewing Rabbit (mesewcrazy.com). If you don't already have the membership or haven't heard of it you should check it out. You get 3 patterns a month for $10 dollars.  Sign up here for membership.

Cali Fay Collection - Gardenia Dress for Women

Sunday, October 12, 2014
I love Cali Fay patterns so when I saw that she was looking for women testers for a new dress pattern I applied. Didn't think I would get chosen but to my surprise I did!!

The test was for the Gardenia Dress for women.  It is a comfy looser fitting knit dress and comes in sizes xxs-xxl. I made a medium since I am 25 weeks pregnant and wanted to make sure there was plenty of room. It has a nice sweetheart detail on the top that adds a little something extra.  Oh and it has pockets! I love pockets.

Not sure what I am looking at....obviously not the camera.

I used  NY Circuit Ashen knit from the Gramercy collection by Leah Duncan for Art Gallery fabric. I picked it up at Finch Sewing Studio in Leesburg, VA but you can also find it on their etsy website.

Because this dress is designed to be on the looser side it will be last my whole pregnancy, which is always nice. It is annoying when you buy something while pregnant and it doesn't last the whole time.

Another plus for me about this dress is the option for layering. Just by itself it is great for spring or summer, add some leggings early spring and fall, throw on a sweater with the leggings and you are set for colder weather.

The fact that my daughter says I looked beautiful in the dress didn't hurt either.

Do yourself a favor and check out Cali Fay Collection patterns. You can pick yourself up the Gardenia pattern and check out all the other great ones she has. I personally own several of her girl patterns and have loved every single one of them.

Thanks for stopping by!
